Baby Steps: How To Set A Goal

Updated: Oct 27

PLEASE tell me that you've seen the movie What About Bob. If you haven't go watch it as soon as you're done reading this post. Instead of giving you all the spoilers on what is one of the most hilarious movies I have ever seen, I'm going to share only a couple of clips and back up Dr. Leo Marvin's plan for Bob Wiley. Today we are talking about taking baby steps and learning how to set a goal.

As hilarious as this movie is, Richard Dryfus' character had some pretty great advice in the tile of that fat yellow book he gave to Bob. Baby steps is more than a repeated line in the movie, it is actually great advice for anyone trying to reach their goals. Whether they are trying to lose weight, grow confidence and resilience, manage stress, overcome anxiety, or have for fun, no one is going to reach a goal in one giant leap. Goals take intention, a plan, perseverance, and baby steps.

How To Set A Goal

RULE #1 - Be Curious, not Judgemental

This is a no judgement zone! Whatever you imagine and want is right. No downplaying or poo-pooing it away.

Grab a piece of paper and a pencil, or you some way to take notes so you can really dig into what we are doing here. I know, I know... you came here for some light reading. It's about to be homework hour, kids! (It won't take long unless you want it to.)

Before you start scribbling madly all the things you want to accomplish, stop and breathe. Creativity requires relaxation. Baby step number one is to relax and let this be easy and fun. Close your eyes and take a slow breath. Use all of your senses so you can see, feel, taste, and hear what you want to experience in your life. Take as long as you need to really dig into this. It might take you 1 minute or 1 hour. There is no rush so go ahead. I'll be here when you're done.

Rule #2 - Be Specific

For the next few days, continue to think about what you want and let it vision grow and become clearer. Keep writing down the parts of your goal that excite you and putting yourself into the feeling of achieving that goal.

It's important to have no idea how to tell when they have what they want. If you're vague and wishy-washy about what you envision for yourself, it's easy to bounce from one idea to the next without any real clarity on when you'll have achieved your goal.

Rule #3 Celebrate Often - Each time you reach an important milestone, CELEBRATE! Celebrating gives you a little hit of dopamine and tells your brain to keep going. You'll create confidence, resilience and momentum so you achieve your goal faster.

Celebrate small successes along the way to your big goal.

Rule #4 - Get Specific To really connect with your goal, it's essential to be as specific as possible and engage all five senses. Visualize yourself achieving your goal, imagining the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings associated with it. Who is with you? What are you wearing? What's the season? This imagery creates a stronger emotional connection and motivates you to take action, but it also gives your brain the familiarity it craves and cuts down on anxiety and overthinking.

Rule #5 - Choose One Step To avoid overwhelm and confusion, don' try to map out the entire process of achieving your goal. Your job is to take one baby step at a time, believing that you'll have the next step and inspriation when you need it.
