Decision Fatigue at Work: Why You Scroll Instead

It's 8:30 PM. The first in a series of Q4 proposals and reports is due tomorrow morning. You've been booked solid since 7 AM, and your brain is shot.
You pick up your phone and promise that it's just a two-minute break..
Forty-five minutes later, you've read three industry threads here, checked scores on X, scrolled past twenty Instagram posts, and the work is still there waiting for you.
It's 9:15 now, your head feels foggier than when you started, you're anxious, and the decisions and work you've been avoiding feel twice as impossible as they did an hour ago.
Decision Fatigue at Work: Why You Scroll Instead
You didn't lose 45 minutes because you lack drive, expertise, or willpower. You lost them because when pressure increases like it does in Q4, your brain does everything it can to help you feel better. Your phone is the easiest, cheapest, fastest relief from decision fatigue and stress it can find.
It's biology and we're all fighting the same instincts. Doctors, lawyers, executives, teenagers - everyone with a phone - is fighting the same lizard brain that prioritizes comfort over success, every time. Creative and rational thinking don't work well when you're stressed out from a day full of meetings and a list of goals that are on an upcoming deadline.
Your brain has to feel safe before it can think creatively or execute a plan, and scrolling gives it the safety it's looking for, in small, addictive doses.
What Scrolling Is Costing You In Q4
It's rarely just the 45 minutes you spend lost in the social media tar pit. It's the call you keep postponing. The hard conversation with your team you avoid because it's uncomfortable. It's showing up to a meeting grouchy or overstimulated because of what you saw while you were checking the feed. Weeks of these micro-distractions stack up, and by December, the Q4 goals that were completely doable in October have turned into year-end emergencies.
How To Break The Scrolling Cycle
Forget willpower. You need a plan.
Get Calm. Before you start your work, get your nervous system out of fight-or-flight. Two minutes of box breathing works. It's the same tool elite athletes, Navy SEALs, and high performers across every field use to help them succeed. (Not sure how to box breathe? DM me. I'll teach you in less than a minute.)
Evaluate then Decide. Choose one non-negotiable priority for the day. Not a list. One thing that gets your best thinking before anything else touches your attention. No phone until this is done.
Act. From that calm, clear state. Everything you do in this headspace takes less energy than the same task done when you're stressed.
💡 A quick trick that makes this easier: put your phone somewhere genuinely inconvenient. Another room. A closed drawer. That small pause is often enough for you to choose not to scroll.
