Performance Visualization for Leaders and Athletes: Your Brain Doesn't Know the Difference

What I'm about to share works for everybody. Especially if you're someone who wants to feel calm, confident, and locked in when the pressure is highest.
One of my favorite tools I use with both competitive swimmers and executive clients is performance visualization, also called mental rehearsal or future pacing. And before you click on out of here, hear me out. Because this isn't woo. It's neuroscience. And it works.
What is performance visualization and why does it work?
Performance visualization, mental rehearsal or future pacing, is the practice of relaxing your body and vividly imagining what you want to experience, while fully engaging your senses. It works because your brain experiences an emotionally charged thought as if it's actually happening. Even when your conscious mind knows you're sitting in your office with your eyes closed, your nervous system doesn't get the memo.
The more you mentally rehearse what you want and feel the emotions attached to it, the more your brain treats it as normal, expected, and certain. And if there's one thing a high-performing brain loves, it's certainty and control.
"Maybe it's 'fake it 'til you make it.' Or maybe it's predicting the future. Either way — it works."
Elite athletes have used mental rehearsal for decades. Olympic swimmers visualize every stroke, every turn, every finish before they ever step on the block. But the research doesn't stop with sports.
Executives who use performance visualization before high-stakes presentations, difficult conversations, and critical decisions report lower anxiety, greater composure, and stronger outcomes.
Your brain doesn't know the difference between a vivid mental rehearsal and the real thing. And that's the whole point!
Mental rehearsal for athletes: overcoming swim meet anxiety
Last week I visited a local high school swim team and walked their athletes through a guided visualization for pre-race performance anxiety. The swimmers who struggle most aren't the ones who lack talent or fitness. They're the ones whose minds get in the way of what their bodies already know how to do.
Swim meet anxiety is real, it's incredibly common, and it's completely coachable. A 10-minute mental rehearsal practice before competition can be the difference between a personal best and a race that doesn't reflect months of training.
If it works for a 16-year-old behind the blocks, it works behind the boardroom door too.
Performance visualization for leaders: the pre-meeting mindset routine
The mental demands of leading a team, navigating a merger, delivering a presentation, or having a hard conversation with a supervisor are not that different from what an athlete faces at the starting block. The pressure looks different but your brain works the same way.
High-performing executives feel nerves as much as the rookie. They've just learned whether consciously or not, how to direct their mind before intense moments arrive.
Performance visualization gives you a repeatable, evidence-based way to walk into any high-stakes situation feeling grounded, clear, and ready.
How to use it:
Find somewhere quiet where you won't be interrupted; your car before you walk in works perfectly.
Start the video. Headphones help.
Close your eyes.
Let your brain do what it does best.
That's it. The more you practice it, the better it works. Ten minutes of intentional mental rehearsal will do more for your performance than ten minutes of last-minute prep ever could.
