30 Day's of Summer Self-Discovery

It's Finally Summer!

Summer is my favorite season. I love the heat and the humidity. I love the laziness and the freedom. I love the way the light sticks around late then comes back early, and the birds waking me in the morning. Ice cream, digging in the dirt, and girls nights by my pool with a glass of wine... I'm all in and I dream about it as soon as it withers away into the fall. Since summer officially begins next week, it's time to celebrate the season, to enjoy life, and to work on ourselves. (Yes, I said work.) While planning all the fun things I wanted to do this summer along with working on my coaching business, I knew that so much of the work that I wanted to do on myself requires digging deep and changing beliefs that I have that may or may not be true. I've been working on myself while also coaching individually and in groups and it has everything to do with processing through what's really going on in your brain and in my brain. Growth and change comes from finding clarity in a mess of ideas and "truths" that you've been collecting since you made your debut on this planet. I also know that one of the best ways to untie the giant knot of what you believe so you can make big, BOLD changes is to brain dump, question what you believe, rewrite your story, and track your progress.

I don't know a better way to do this that to journal, my friend. Journaling can be as simple and informal as using the notes app on your phone, to a spiral bound notebook and a pencil, to a gorgeous hardbound journal and a quill pen if that's your thing.

So how do you begin journaling for self-discovery?

First (and maybe the hardest part), find a place where you can have some peace and quiet. I love to write in the early morning when my house is quiet and I can go on an uninterrupted binge. Take a few deep breaths to relax. If you're not sure what to write about, don't try to figure it out. In my experience, that clogs the pipeline of creativity and discovery. Let your brain dump whatever comes up for you.

Because I know when I was beginning to journal, I wasn't sure where to start, I wanted to make it easy on you. I have a Free 30 Day Self-Reflective Journal Prompt PDF for you to download. Even if only for 5 minutes a day, give yourself time to write. Some of the prompts I'm sharing are silly, some are serious. Some will feel simple and some will challenge you. Where you take them is entirely up to you!

You can doodle, you can use colorful pens and write every sentence in a different color, or you can type. What matters is that you write freely about whatever pops into your head - no questioning, no editing, no do-overs.

All three are journals, all three are different. There is no wrong way.

When you're done writing for the day, go back and read what you scribbled down.

Question your thoughts.

Wonder about why you may have written them and remember that just because you think something doesn't mean it's true!

Did you say something you don't want to believe about yourself anymore? Rewrite it to be what you DO want to believe.

I'm often amazed at the words that roll out of my brain when I write without stopping. Things I didn't even realize I believe come up and enlighten me - I change my perspective and my mood without realizing I was holding thoughts that were stuck in my brain. It's seriously amazing.
